Troop 8  Updates: BSA Troop 8  January - April 2003

Troop Outings

It's been a busy first quarter for Troop 8. Here's a quick recap of our year so far:

Red Rock Canyon camping/backpacking trip , 25-26 January. The younger Scouts camped while the older Scouts took a 10 mile backpack trip during which some of them completed requirements for the Wilderness Survival merit badge which included sleeping without their sleeping bags or a tent!

Backpack to Valley Forge campground, 22-23 February. A small group of packers hiked into Valley Forge campground from Red Box. It was a simple, pleasant trip.

CPR Training, 22 March. A number of Scouts and adult leaders took this opportunity to get or renew their CPR training with a Red Cross certified instructor. Every participant earned his CPR card, good for one year. We'll try to hold this event again next year.

Joshua Tree Camp and Backpack , 29-30 March. The camping and backpacking groups led entirely separate outings. The campers visited Indian Cove campground while the packers hiked a 10 mile portion the California Riding and Hiking Trail, camping among the boulders along the way.

Spring Camporee , 11-13 April. Troop 8 participated in the District Spring Camporee. The Scouts had a great time and came home with a few awards. They'll be on display at the Court of Honor.

Log Cabin Training Hike #1 - Mt. Williamson , 25-27 April. This was a 12 mile loop-hike with 5 miles of the trip over a trail-less route up and down over three steep, rugged back-country peaks. As part of High Adventure supervisor Jody Toole's campaign to give the high adventure Scouts more independence and responsibility, the boys led this hike, set the pace, picked the camping spots and determined the cross-country route all on their own. They had a great win doing this!

Community Service

Troop 8 participated in the Easter Sunday Sunrise Service at the Hollywood Bowl. This yearly non-denominational religious event has been held at the Bowl since the early 1920's. Our Scouts joined about twenty other Scouts from around Los Angeles to perform in the opening ceremony. This will become an annual event for Troop 8. So mark your calendar for next Easter!
