Our trip began from Red Box Pass just 15 miles up the hill from our meeting place in La Canada, California. The day was warm and sunny and there were plenty of hikers sharing the trail with us since it was Memorial Day weekend.
As we descended 2.5 miles into the headwaters of the West Fork of the San Gabriel River we soon discovered that there was a nice mosquito hatch going on this year. Turning this unfortunate circumstance to our advantage we held a mosquito bite counting contest with the winner turning in a report of 108.
The heavy rains this year brought abundant wild flowers and the forest was exceptionally beautiful. We spotted trout in the stream and signs of deer and bear in the forest.
At the campground, Valley Forge, we met a group from Troop 319 of La Crescenta and enjoyed several games of Capture the Flag with them.
On Sunday we returned to Red Box Pass and home from the sunny forests to the foggy city. All of us better trained and prepared for more adventures in the future.
