| Troop 8 got a taste of winter mountaineering on the Dec. 14 hike up Mt. Williamson (the one in the San Gabriels, not the Sierras). The sun played peekaboo on the drive up Angeles Crest, but by the time we hit the trail the sky was a solid slate gray and winds with a hint of sleet gusted 30-40 mph across the ridges. At the summit a fallen tree gave some lunchtime shelter from the wind, but by the time everyone was packed up for the return trip it started to snow in earnest, and the mountains quickly took on an appropriate look for the season. It was an excellent chance for the scouts to learn how to dress for this kind of weather, and several of them even claimed to enjoy the trip in spite of frozen fingers and faces.
