Well, Shiver me timbers, mate they did it! I would'na thought it possible, them being such landlubbers and all. But blimey, mates there they were, I seen 'em with me own eyes, I did, 16 Scouts and 4 adults from Troop 8 floating down the mighty Colorado like a bunch of old sea-dogs. And flying the Jolly Roger too!

And on rafts they made themselves, mind you,out of plywood and old inner tubes. Ah, but it was a grand adventure. Two days on the river and on the second day a windstorm so fierce the rafts were being blown backward and sideways into Arizona.
And just when it looked like we might be headin' for for old Davy Jones locker for sure, why that's when the boys proved themselves to be real sea-dogs after all. They stripped the canvas from the canopy frames, tied the rafts close together and kept us on the California side of the river.

What a fine sight that was. We looked like a bloody sea monster a comin' down the river, bucking and twisting at its joints with the flesh stripped from its bones. But we lived to tell the tale. So lift your mugs and join me in a toast to the newly crowned “Lazy Rats” of Troop 8. Yo, ho ho and a bottle of Root Beer. --Jody Toole, also known as “Long Jody Silver.” Assistant Scoutmaster

shiver me timbers: an exclamation used by sailors in the sense of “to shatter” or “to splinter into pieces”, the timbers being those of the ship.
blimey: [from (God) blind me] a British exclamation of surprise, wonder, etc.
Jolly Roger: a black flag with a skull and crossbones; symbol of piracy.
Davy Jones locker: the bottom of the ocean, specifically the ocean regarded as the grave of those drowned at sea or buried there.
